► New -cp switch allows to select a compression profile in command line mode. It is supported only by GUI WinRAR.exe, not by rar.exe.

New "Options" page of archiving dialog contains the group of settings modifying the behavior of "Delete files after archiving" option from "General" page:

► Delete files. Delete files normally like in previous WinRAR versions.
► Move files to Recycle Bin. Deleted files are placed to Recycle Bin.
► Command line equivalent of this option is -dr switch.
► Wipe files. Before deleting file data are overwritten by zero bytes to prevent recovery of deleted files.
► Command line equivalent of this option is -dw switch.
► All these options have an effect only if "Delete files after archiving" is on. You can enable any of these options in the default compression profile to change the default behavior of "Delete files after archiving".
► WinRAR "Extraction path and options" dialog is now resizable. You can use the mouse to drag its border to the desired size and provide more space for folder tree pane. WinRAR will store new dimensions of this dialog.
► New "Update" SFX script command and "Update mode" group of options in "Update" page of "Advanced SFX options" dialog. These command and options allow to check time and implement file time based updating;
► SFX script "Shortcut" command and "Add shortcut..." command in "Advanced SFX options" dialog now allow to specify an icon file containing an icon associated with shortcut.
► New "Wipe temporary files" option in "Settings/Security" dialog provides more secure, though slower, way to delete temporary WinRAR files.

WinRAR and RAR automatically expand names of environment variables in list files. For example, a list file can contain lines like:

¿Qué haría Google? - What Would Google Do?

La premisa de What Would Google Do?, el nuevo libro del bloguero Jeff Jarvis (w*w.buzzmachine.com) se reduce a esto: ceder el control en Internet a los usuarios, lectores, audiencias y consumidores.

Pero, entre líneas, Jarvis nos dice que no se trata tanto de cederlo sino de aceptar que el control en Internet ya no está en manos de las empresas, gobiernos o instituciones, sino de la gente. El poder ha cambiado de manos, nos dice en 246 páginas.

Y para demostrarlo usa a Google, la gigante, actual, de Internet. Porque como dicen las primeras dos líneas del libro, mientras muchos han fracaso en entender el ciberespacio – leáse AOL; Netscape, Yahoo!, y un largo etcétera – Google ha triunfado y tiene más de US$18,000 millones en ingresos anuales para demostrarlo.
La clave de este éxito, dice Jarvis, es que Google escucha a sus usuarios y se deja guiar por sus preferencias, aptitudes, gustos y caprichos. Eso, llevado a cualquier industria, es la fórmula del triunfo. Jarvis es un absolutista – como buen consultor y autor – y, por ende, no se aleja de las frases hechas y omnipotentes y los axiomas determinantes: “Ceder el control a la masa”; “Gratis es el nuevo modelo de negocios”; “Los nichos son el nuevo mercado de masas”; “Las empresas más exitosas son redes y plataformas donde otros se expresan”. Y, casi casi, “El mundo digital es mejor que el mundo real”.

Si usted logra suspender un poco la realidad e ir más allá de este absolutismo mercadológico, las ideas, propuestas y recomendaciones de Jarvis le servirán de algo. Pero si lo toma como una verdad única, le encontrará peros.
Porque peros hay muchos. Mientras Jarvis promueve el modelo de negocios de la gratuidad como el único viable en Internet (demuestra que prácticamente todos los servicios y plataformas de Google – Blogger, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.- son gratis y que Google hace dinero sólo con la publicidad) él ha decidido vender su libro, en papel, por buenos US$27, editado por una casa convencional y tradicional. Eso le dio municiones a sus detractores. Otra cosa que le reprochan sus críticos (que hay muchos) es haber decidido escribir el libro sin entrevistar a ningún ejecutivo de Google.

Pero es que el libro no es sobre Google, sino sobre una ideología y actitud de negocios que recurre a la audiencia para tomar decisiones educadas, inteligentes y, a veces, muy efectivas.

WWGD? es de la escuela de libros como “The Long Tail”, de Chris Anderson, editor de la revista Wired, y de “Here Comes Everybody”, del maestro de NYU Clay Shirky. Al igual que esos dos libros usa los ejemplos de Craig Newmark, fundador de Craig’s List, y de sitios como Threadless.com y Wikipedia para demostrar la llamada “sabiduría de masas”, o como la audiencia puede colaborar cuasi-organizadamente para ya sea producir la enciclopedia más grande del mundo (Wikipedia) o votar a favor de un diseño de camiseta (Threadless.com). Aunque son buenos ejemplos, a veces me pregunto si el hecho de que aparecen en todos estos libros indica que se está abusando de ellos para enfatizar los puntos de los autores, y que con tan pocos ejemplos representativos la sabiduría de masas no lo es tanto.

Pero Jarvis es un tío inteligente y hay que escucharlo (si bien no tomar todo lo que dice literalmente, por lo que ya indiqué).

Debajo de la premisa principal del libro con relación a Internet y el mundo digital – ceder el control – se encuentran muchas otras: la gente se puede relacionarse desde cualquier lugar, ya sea en contra o a favor de un individuo, empresa o gobierno; el mercado masivo está muerto, viva el mercado de nichos; los mercados deben estar basados en conversaciones, con base en el Manifesto de Cluetrain; pasaremos de una economía basada en la escasez (blockbusters) a una basada en la abundancia (“The Long Tail”); permitirle a los clientes colaborar le da un valor añadido al producto; las empresas más exitosas de hoy en día son redes de interactividad; el verdadero activo de una empresa no son sus productos o gente, sino cuán abierta está a escuchar a sus clientes.

Luego, para subrayar estos puntos, Jarvis da muchos ejemplos. Uno de los primeros narra como el propio Jarvis recurrió a su blog para quejarse de las deficiencias de su nueva laptop Dell. Al principio, dice, Dell hizo caso omiso a sus quejas, pero cuando el asunto se volvió un revuelo en la blogósfera no le quedó de otra más que reponer la PC, pedir una disculpa y abrir un foro digital para las quejas y sugerencias de los clientes. Moraleja: si no nos escuchas, pagarás un precio caro. Si una empresa aprende a escuchar, dice Jarvis, su peor cliente se puede convertir en su mejor socio.

Otro mantra del autor, que repite constantemente en su blog Buzzmachine.com, es: “Dedícate a lo que haces mejor, y crea vínculos a todo lo demás”. Esto está dirigido principalmente a las empresas de información, a quienes les dice que deben de saber cuál es su mayor fortaleza – cobertura local o deportiva – y para todo lo que esté fuera de esa fortaleza ofrecer sólo ligas, vínculos. Este es el llamado “link journalism” o periodismo de vínculos del que Jarvis es ávido promotor.

Jarvis explica que Internet ha eliminado por completo la necesidad de intermediarios. Ahora las empresas y los gobiernos se pueden comunicar directamente con sus clientes y usuarios. Por eso Google ha tenido tanto éxito, porque ha logrado crear una plataforma que es una parada única y obligada para hacer búsquedas, escribir blogs y leer emails, creando un mercado cautivo para sus anunciantes y, aún mejor, dando la oportunidad a estos anunciantes (grandes y pequeños) a encontrar clientes interesados en sus productos entre una cantidad infinita de blogs, sitios de noticias y páginas Web. Google pone los anuncios, los cibernautas ponen el contenido y los usuarios ofrecen los ojos a los que los anunciantes quieren llegar.

A pesar de que Google News ha sido duramente criticado por “robarse” las ligas a los sitios de noticias, en realidad, dice Jarvis, funciona como el quiosco moderno. Sin Google sería imposible llegar a estos contenidos; no aparecer en una búsqueda en Google es como no existir. Aun mejor, dice Jarvis, Google ha creado un método inteligente para definir la importancia de cada sitio en los resultados de búsqueda, con base en el número de sitios externos que vinculen a cada página. A esto le llama “Googlejuice”, o el combustible que impulsa a un sitio específico a aparecer dentro de los primeros resultados de una búsqueda. Tener Googlejuice es existir.

Expandiendo sobre los modelos de negocios en línea, Jarvis explica que para los grandes sitios de Internet que quieran competir en ese nuevo mundo lo importante es dominar su mercado, captar la mayor audiencia o número de clientes posibles y apuntar a márgenes ínfimos para bloquear la entrada de cualquier competidor. Así sitios como Craig’s List han logrado regalar prácticamente todos sus servicios, captando a millones de usuarios y creando un posicionamiento de marca envidiable. A CL le basta con cobrar sólo por los anuncios de empleo y de bienes raíces y regalar todo lo demás gracias a que puede ofrecer todos esos servicios adicionales gratis sin un mayor gasto – ofrecer más canales de clasificados y/o ciudades no le cuesta prácticamente nada – y así dominar por completo su sector. Sin embargo, dice el autor, en el momento que decida cobrar más o cerrar canales, aparecerá el competidor que quiera dar mucho más por mucho menos.

Jarvis no se regodea demasiado sobre los atributos internos de la organización y administración interna de Google, fuera de señalar cosas muy conocidas como la ley del 20%, sobre la cual Google le da a cada uno de sus empleados la libertad de hacer lo que quieran durante 20% de su tiempo (un día por semana). Sin embargo, explica Jarvis, esto no implica esparcimiento, sino que la empresa espera resultados concretos que estén sustentados en análisis y datos cuantificables. La famosa fuerza de innovación de Google tiene su sustento en estas prácticas y su fiel ciega por la estadística y la matemática. Al final, como dice Jarvis, Google no es una empresa de medios como pretendió ser AOL o incuso Yahoo!, sino una plataforma y una red basada en algoritmos que aprende y se modifica matemáticamente gracias a las actitudes repetitivas de miles de usuarios. Google, nos recuerda Jarvis, quiere organizar la información del mundo en una plataforma estructurada, funcional, abierta y acogedora. E información es un término muy amplio.

A la industria de los periódicos Jarvis recomienda cinco cosas: a) producir contenidos exclusivos y únicos; a) abrirse para que Google y el resto del mundo encuentre y llegue a sus contenidos; c) aprovechar esa audiencia cuando llegue; d) crear ligas a otras fuentes, concentrándose en lo que hacen mejor y vinculando a todo lo demás; y e) dar valor añadido a esa selección de contenidos externos.

También les sugiere que aprovechen las cualidades del mundo digital para deshacerse de los “átomos”: los costos fijos de las imprentas, edificios, etc, y que aprovechen la plataforma digital para distribuir sus contenidos por todas partes y a todas horas, no en un solo portal sino donde sea que el lector quiera leerlos. Convertirse en una plataforma y una red que ofrezca aplicaciones y herramientas informativas a los usuarios, para que se congreguen y expresen usándolas; abrirse a la colaboración, con ciudadanos y otros medios; aprender a escuchar a los usuarios; ser brutalmente eficientes, manteniendo organizaciones ligeras y veloces; atender a los nichos de información; organizar bien y elegantemente los contenidos, para que sean accesibles a toda hora y en todas partes; y evitar a toda costa la pereza y comodidad que llevó a los grandes periódicos a dejar de innovar.

Como dije al principio, Jarvis toma las cualidades de Google y las extrapola a otras industrias, preguntándose cómo serían industrias como la automotriz, la aérea y de consumo si operaran sobre principios similares a los de la gigante de Internet – si escucharan e incluyeran a sus clientes en todas sus decisiones, pues.

Si usted está dispuesto a creer que la época de la apertura total ha llegado – hacia el cliente, el lector, al usuario –y que no sólo no debemos de cerrarnos sino que hay que ofrecer total transparencia, este libro es para usted. Si cree que Internet es una plataforma social en donde el usuario está en control y que las redes de usuarios pueden crear, sugerir e innovar, de forma organizada y lógica, sin duda le gustará este libro. Y si usted acepta la premisa de que la vida digital debe vivirse en público, y que Internet es un espacio para crear relaciones profundas y fructíferas, vaya a comprarlo ya. Aunque muchas de sus premisas son débiles y frágiles, si toma este libro con un grano de sal le ofrecerá buenas ideas y puntos de partida para el desarrollo de proyectos digitales y para entender parte de lo que sucede actualmente en el maravilloso y complejo mundo del ciberespacio.

En los primeros tiempos de Internet observé a grupos de discusión en los que los participantes pensaban que existía una increíble nueva compañía que había adquirido todo el contenido imaginable sobre cualquier tema posible, como la fusión de una biblioteca, un periódico, una revista y un servicio meteorológico. Esa empresa era Netscape.

Simplemente creó el primer navegador comercial que dirigía a los lectores a las páginas web de otras empresas. Pero el crédito se lo llevaba Netscape. Hoy en día esa marca alucinante es Google. La gente acude a la Red en busca de algo, encuentra la respuesta, y muchas veces no sabe dónde la encontró. La encontró Google. Ahora la gente es más sabia y sabe que Google no es propietaria de todo el contenido hacia el que enlaza. Pero eso no importa, siempre y cuando encuentre lo que busca, y Google es increíblemente bueno en eso. Eso es bueno para los usuarios, pero malo para las marcas. Te devanas los sesos para crear una marca online, creas tecnología y un equipo para mantener tu web, te gastas una fortuna en marketing y en optimización para que la gente lo encuentre, le dices a los anunciantes cuántos usuarios visitan la página y reconocen tu marca. Pero al final, un altísimo número de usuarios no recuerda haber visitado tu página web ni reconoce tu marca. Cuando trabajé en periódicos digitales sabíamos que teníamos más usuarios de los que decían las encuestas. El problema era que cuando se preguntaba a los usuarios dónde habían visto un artículo que sólo podía haber sido a través de nosotros, a menudo no lo solían recordar. Se lo había encontrado Google. Google diluía nuestras marcas.

Google ha convertido la comodificación o generalización en una estrategia de mercado. El contenido se convierte en un producto de uso corriente: Google hace que sea tan fácil para usted encontrar lo que he escrito yo sobre un tema como lo que ha escrito Newsweek. Hubo un tiempo en que las marcas organizaban la información; ahora lo hace Google. Los medios se comodifican: Google coloca anuncios de los clientes en páginas web sin decirles dónde van a aparecer esos anuncios. No coloca esos anuncios como lo haría una agencia de publicidad (basándose en el tamaño de la audiencia, la demografía, la confianza o el valor de una marca de comunicación) sino basándose en la coincidencia de palabras en una página. El valor del anuncio depende únicamente de cuánta gente pincha sobre él. Por lo tanto, la marca del medio que respalda el contenido en donde aparece el anuncio resulta ser menos decisiva y menos valiosa. Incluso la audiencia se generaliza: hay muy poco que nos distinga a unos de otros, ni la edad, ni los ingresos, sexo, educación, intereses, todas las cosas por los que los anunciantes tradicionalmente han pagado. Somos iguales los unos a los otros. Sólo somos usuarios. Bien podríamos ser tiras de beicon. Y los anunciantes también se comodifican: sus anuncios de texto parecen todos iguales, sin sus logotipos caros y sus esloganes. Uno pensaría que se opondrían a ello, pero no les preocupa porque sólo pagan por los clicks. Google ha reducido inteligentemente el riesgo de la publicidad, así que los anunciantes dejan que Google siga conduciendo.

No todo es malo. La nivelación del campo de juego que Internet y Google han puesto en marcha también ha hecho posible que una pequeña tienda que vende un producto especializado pueda encontrar a su cliente ideal, o que un simple blogger pueda codearse con los grandes y viejos medios. Pero resulta irónico que en ese proceso nuestras identidades únicas, personalidades, marcas, cualificaciones, intereses, relaciones y reputaciones como editores (valores que Internet facilita) se pueden perder aún cuando se nos puede encontrar a través de Google.

¿Qué hacer ante la amenaza de comodificación? Una respuesta inteligente sería jugar con las reglas de Google y llevarse su dinero, tal y como ha hecho About.com. O unirse en una red con otros segmentos especializados para llegar a una masa crítica, como ha hecho Glam.com. O puede hacer que la gente enlace hacia usted y hable de usted porque es increíblemente bueno, como hace Apple. O puede colocar sus anuncios en páginas web con un público muy definido en donde sabe que están sus clientes, regalando potitos a lectoras fieles de un blog para mamás. Puede desarrollar una relación profunda con sus seguidores para que vengan a usted directamente, no sólo a través de las búsquedas en Google, usando servicios sociales como Facebook. Sirva bien a su segmento de mercado en lugar de servir mal a la masa.

Tracing Paper. The tracing paper feature gives you the ability to turn your canvas into tracing paper so that you can see a reference image below it for use as a drawing guide. This is invaluable for many types of work.

Cloning. Cloning, taking image data from somewhere else and placing it into your painting, that is cloning. The source image for the TwistedBrush cloning brushes can be a different image or from another area of your current picture. The cloners can be used to render a photo as a artist drawing, or to touch-up a photo or do many things in-between.

Scripts. With scripts you can record your painting actions and play them back, recreating your painting from scratch. This has value for trying out different "what-if" scenarios, for teaching pusposes, for animation production when used with the AVI saving option or just for entertainment.

Pattern Brushes. There are a number of ArtSets that contain Pattern brushes. These brushes paint a pattern on your canvas as you paint. Adjust the size the pattern with the density slider. Categories of patterns include, surface, materials, nature and others.

Brush Shapes. Most any brush in TwistedBrush can be further enhanced with a shape.

Drawing Guides. Drawing guides are a visual aid that appears over your canvas to help you with perspective, distances, and general construction of your artwork. A large number of different drawing guides are included.

The newest version brings another installer's code changes. Since now it is possible to start TC UP with operating system. Because of false alerts provided by antivirus applications, TC UP is installed with safe mode, without any suspicious files. The project has gained WinContig application for deframenting files purpose. Advanced users should be satisfy with excellent log viewer called Tail for Win32. The way of providing additional informations in customized columns has been corrected.

Skype es una utilidad para hablar a través del PC con tus conocidos que promete una mayor calidad de sonido que el resto de programas de este tipo, incluso afirmando más que una llamada de teléfono ordinaria. ¿Lo conseguirá Skype?

Skype es lo más parecido a realizar una llamada que existe, hasta suenan los típicos sonidos telefónicos. Realizas la llamada (con un simple clic), puedes descolgar cuando te llaman, colgar, incluso comunica si ya se está hablando con otra persona.

Skype posee lista de amigos, logs de llamadas, un buscador rápido y completo con el que encontrarás fácilmente personas con las que hablar en el idioma que desees, diferentes estados (disponible, invisible, ocupado, etc.), ¡hasta tiene llamadas perdidas!

La nueva funcionalidad sólo está integrada en la última versión de Skype, por lo que tendréis que descargarla primero, y por el momento sólo es aplicable a la versión Windows.

► Primero, descargar la nueva versión de Skype http://www.skype.com/go/downloading , e instalarlo de forma habitual en el ordenador (es sólo necesario para coger el ejecutable, luego se puede desinstalar).
► Buscar el ejecutable Skype.exe en el ordenador, por defecto en: C:\Archivos de Programa\Skype\Phone\Skype.exe
► Copiar el ejecutable a un directorio en el Pendrive
► Dentro de ese directorio, crear un subdirectorio llamado “datos”
► Crear un archivo con el bloc de notas llamado skype.bat en el mismo directorio que el ejecutable
► Editar el archivo .bat y escribir la siguiente línea de comando:
skype.exe /datapath:”Datos” /removable

Y listo, a partir de ahora ejecutando el archivo Skype.bat tendremos Skype plenamente funcional desde el pendrive.
